Gone are the days when a pregnant mother was best suited to sitting on the couch and watching her belly grow. In fact, recent guidelines suggest that most pregnant women should engage in at least 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise on most days of the week.
Regular exercise during pregnancy promises a wide range of benefits including fewer aches and pains, better sleep, less risk of developing high blood pressure or gestational diabetes, and even a quicker return to pre-pregnancy weight.
The only dilemma is to find the right type of exercise that is both comfortable and enjoyable. Although there are many great options, prenatal water aerobics is one way to achieve a well rounded work-out in an environment that is both comfortable and gentle for a pregnant woman’s body.
Working in the water protects joints from excessive stress and strain, and it can help lighten the load placed on a mother’s spine by the added weight of her baby. Many women comment that the pool is the only place that they don’t “feel pregnant”. In addition, regular water sessions can help alleviate swelling in the ankles and feet that often occurs within the third trimester.
Alpine Physical Therapy offers prenatal water aerobics classes instructed by a licensed physical therapist. Classes incorporate moderate intensity exercise in an un-weighted environment and includes cardiovascular, strengthening, and stretching exercises in accordance to all prenatal precautions. Classes are targeted to all fitness levels.
One-hour sessions are scheduled Tuesdays and Fridays 12:00-1:00, and Tuesday from 6:30-7:30 PM. (Additional evening class times may be available by request.)
