Golf Fitness: The ‘Titleist Advantage’ at Alpine

A few years back, I had an “Aha” moment. It was the perfect concoction. Sort of like the mad scientist who mixes the perfect combination of chemicals and creates something that gives you a much bigger bang for your buck. That combination which I discovered is the world of golf fitness.

I knew there was a connection between the many golfers I treated and their myriad ailments. That wasn’t a coincidence. For instance, when it comes to back pain in golfers, get this, 60 percent have it.

Pain is one thing. Performance is another. Now days, it is known that the two go hand in hand. Thus, when you blend the world of physical medicine and that of wellness, there is no greater example than the medical golf fitness connection. It’s a blend that yields the perfect amount of balance, strength, and flexibility—affording your body the capability to swiftly absorb and release energy for greater accuracy and club speed than ever before.

Ever since Tiger took the scene back in the mid 90s, golf fitness has quickly ramped up to its current rage. Sadly, there is a tremendous amount of misinformation and inappropriate and ineffective approaches out there. That’s consistent with the cogent quote by Dr. Greg Rose, the co-founder of the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI). He says, “You can make a good golfer great and a great golfer good.” That’s right. Simply putting a golfer through a rounded program of fitness, as is often done, might actually hamstring his or her performance. And if the golfer does perform better, which component actually made the difference?

This is where the knowledge and database of Titleist comes in. And yes I am referring to Titleist, the golf Company. Their approach to golf fitness, ushered forth through TPI, takes an entirely scientific approach. Through extensive 3-D video analysis and years of experience in the area of medical golf fitness, TPI has created and mentored in the areas of sound golf performance principles and approaches.

It’s the “less is more” concept. You see, my goal as a Titleist Certified Medical Golf Fitness Instructor is not to burden you with every possible exercise available to humankind.  Rather, the Titleist Advantage yields a focused analysis and medical screen to determine the presence of body faults—such as inflexibility, immobility, weakness, limited balance, etc.—and correlates them with potential swing faults that culminate in many-a-mis-hit, incessant inaccuracy, and a paucity of power. From there, it’s all about corrective exercises and drills to improve your body and your swing. Performance is dialed in.

I’ll have a lot more to say about the benefits and advantages of this focused golf fitness model in future blog entries. For now, you can get more information on the Titleist Advantage available through The Golf Clinic at Alpine Physical Therapy by clicking here.
